TRICARE Plans Explained

TRICARE Prime

HMO-like coverage with a Primary Care Manager (PCM). Free for active duty, low-cost for retirees. Best for those near military treatment facilities (MTFs).

TRICARE Select

PPO-like coverage with more provider flexibility. No PCM referral needed. Higher cost-shares than Prime but more freedom to choose providers.

TRICARE for Life

Medicare supplement for military retirees 65+. Works alongside Medicare Part A and B to cover remaining costs. Premium-free for qualifying retirees.

TRICARE Supplement Insurance

Private plans that cover TRICARE cost-shares. Especially useful for retirees and families with frequent medical needs. USAA and other carriers offer TRICARE supplements.
